Marshall’s student yearbook, the Columbian, has been serving as the school’s premier historical record since our building was opened in 1962.

More than just a book of faces, the yearbook tells the story of what it’s like to be a Marshall student. Student journalists fill every page with feature stories and full-color photographs covering all aspects of student life, academics, sports, and student organizations.

The student editors lead the publication, create its theme and vision, and oversee all its content. Each May/June, the staff is able to show off their hard work in the form of a treasured annual keepsake.

Students can join the Columbian staff by enrolling in Marshall’s Photojournalism class. (While not strictly required, students are encouraged to first take Journalism 1, where they will learn all the skills necessary to succeed as a member of the yearbook staff.)

The Columbian has been consistently recognized as one of the best yearbooks in the state and country. It has been a finalist multiple times for the prestigious Pacemaker award from the National Scholastic Press Association as well as the Crown award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. It has also received numerous Trophy Class ratings from the Virginia High School League. In 2021, the Columbian received VHSL’s Charles E. Savedge Award for Sustained Excellence in Scholastic journalism.
