Principal's Message

September 1, 2021

Dear Marshall Family,

As we approach a 4-day weekend, I wanted to send out some important information.

Back to School Night

Back to School Night will be held September 14th. This will be a live, virtual event. Due to positive feedback from last year’s event, current COVID rates, and parking space issues, it will not be held at school. You will be able to visit with your child’s teachers live, from your home.

For your information, each teacher will post a link to their class at 5:00 pm on the 14th. Therefore, you will need to have a parent Schoology account and know how to access your child’s classes. Certainly, your child can help you with this.

1.)  Prior to September 14, make sure that you have downloaded Zoom on the device that you are using to “attend” each teacher’s class. Zoom is already loaded on student computers, and this link will help you download it on any other device https://zoom.us/download

2.)  To access Back to School Night, you will need to log into your Schoology Account at https://lms.fcps.edu/

3.) To log-in to Schoology, use the same credentials as your ParentVue account. If you have any issues accessing your account or if you have not yet set-up a ParentVue account, visit this site https://www.fcps.edu/return-school/technology-support-families

If you need additional support, you can scroll to the bottom of that site, and click the link to submit a ticket for help.

4.)  Once you are in Schoology, you can navigate to each of your student’s courses, and look for the Green Back to School Night Folder that will become available 5:00 pm on September 14. This is where you will find each teacher’s Zoom Link, as well as the schedule for class rotations, which is copied below.

Finally, there are three live optional virtual sessions that will happen prior to BTSN:

     1.  A Family Life Education Materials Review Sessions

     2.  A PTSA Information Session

     3.  A GCM Boosters Information Session

Links to these three sessions will be sent out next week.

The schedule for BTSN will be as follows:

  • Family Life Education Materials Review           5:00-5:30

  • Virtual GCM Boosters Session                          5:15-5:30

  • Virtual PTSA Information Session                     5:30-5:45

  • 5th period                      6:26-6:36

“Blue Day”

Finally, teachers will post a recording of their session the following day.

Social-Emotional Screener

Between October 12th and 22nd, all FCPS schools will be administering a Universal SEL Screener to all students. This screener will be administered three times this school year to measure growth. The screener itself takes 10 minutes and contains 18 total questions. We will administer this screener at GCM on October 18th during 4th period.

The purpose of the screener is to be able to better support student mental health and social emotional wellness.

Attached to this message is a letter with more information as well as information related to how you can opt your child out of this wonderful opportunity, if you so choose. Opt-out forms can be brought to the main office or emailed to @email

October 13th – PSAT/SAT Day

On October 13th, all 10th and 11th graders will be given the PSAT and 12th graders who opted in, will be given the SAT.

All 9th graders will not come to school this day and will instead be given asynchronous work by their teachers to complete at home.

For the 10th, 11th and 12th graders who are coming to school, this day will be a half day of school.

That is all the announcements for now. Please remember that there is no school Friday, September 3rd or Monday, September 6th. We will see students back in class on Tuesday, September 7th.

I wish you and your family a wonderful long weekend!

Sincerely,

Jeffrey D. Litz
