Principal's Message

I apologize for the length of this message; however, this is important information.

You may be aware that we have already used 5 snow days. Per FCPS policy, the School Board approved the use of flexibility provided by the General Assembly to use unscheduled virtual learning days, wherever possible to support continued learning.

Because we are getting snow and ice Sunday into Monday, it is possible Tuesday will be snow day number six and this would trigger our first synchronous virtual snow day.

Here is what will/should happen:

  1. Every teacher at GCM has already posted a ZOOM link in Schoology for their individual classes. Just before each class is set to begin, students will log onto this link and meet with their teachers synchronously for all, or part, of each period. This day counts as a day of school.
  1. Each Virtual Snow Day will be a two-hour late start. The bell schedule for virtual snow day instruction will be:

  1. Teachers will take attendance in SIS each class period.
  1. Regarding instruction specifically, a teacher can choose to teach bell to bell or have a blend of face to face with student independent work.
  1. In the event we are going virtual for the day, I will send an email to families and students, so you are aware.

Finally, it is important that your child check their laptop connectivity at home now so that in the event of an issue it can be resolved before an actual snow day occurs. I am asking every GCM student to follow the steps below at home using their FCPS-issued or personal device before the end of the day tomorrow:

Technology Readiness Steps for Students to Complete at Home

  1. Log onto your FCPS laptop with your student ID and password.
  2. Connect your laptop to your internet connection.
  3. Login to Google account.  In the Chrome browser, go to, sign in with your account.
  4. Log into Schoology. Make sure you can access your courses.
  5. If you have any issues with these steps from home, go to the Tech Support for Families page, to submit a ticket for support. It is also a good idea to Bookmark the Tech Support for Families Page.
